Carliss N. Chatman
Carliss Chatman is an experienced attorney with a proven track record in all facets of the legal process including pre-trial matters, trying jury cases to successful verdicts, and negotiating substantial settlements for her clients. Her practice focuses on trial law, appeals and arbitration in mass tort, pharmaceutical, oil, gas and mineral law and commercial litigation cases.
In addition to negotiating settlements and obtaining successful verdicts, Ms. Chatman has also analyzed and drafted position statements regarding the constitutionality of statutes and the impact of statutory revisions for presentation to the Texas Legislature. She has also prepared responsive and dispositive motions in numerous state and federal jurisdictions including Texas, Missouri, Illinois, Maryland and Delaware.
Ms. Chatman’s experience includes:
- Provided pre-trial representation of an international oil and gas company in state and federal regulatory matters that originated from an explosion at its Texas City refinery and a pipeline spill in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.
- Represented a multi-national group of services providing and manufacturing companies in mass tort litigation.
- Served on pre-trial and investigation team representing the world’s largest offshore drilling contractor in multi-district litigation and federal government review of matters arising out of an explosion and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
- Lead pre-trial efforts in hundreds of cases in a multi-district litigation representing a Fortune 100 pharmaceutical manufacturer in lawsuits brought by plaintiffs alleging heart damage after use of prescription medication.
- Represented commercial and residential litigants in cases that resulted from Hurricane Ike.
- Drafted briefs in defense of constitutional challenges to asbestos and silica statutes in Texas.
- Represented a leading international insurance and financial services organization in the defense of a multi-billion dollar Section 29 Tax Credit dispute related to synthetic fuel plants. Obtained a favorable settlement with the IRS before trial and to ensure continued compliance with the Code through the expiration of the tax credit.
- Represented a global natural gas corporation in an action to recover insurance proceeds for loss of equipment and business interruption in Italy following a plant explosion.
- Represented a Fortune 500 natural gas infrastructure company in arbitration against the largest publicly traded oil and gas company.
